Hiking Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park

 
 

Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park is a sprawling historical site located just outside Atlanta. It preserves the battlefield where the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain took place during the Atlanta Campaign of 1864. Kennesaw Mountain Summit

 

Kennesaw Mountain Trail:

This trail is the most popular and well-known in the park. It stretches for approximately 2.2 miles to the summit of Kennesaw Mountain, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. As you ascend, you'll encounter historic Civil War sites, including earthwork fortifications, cannons, and interpretive signs that provide insight into the area's role during the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain. The trail is moderately strenuous, making it a rewarding challenge for hikers. At the top, you'll be rewarded with sweeping vistas of Atlanta's skyline and the picturesque Georgia countryside.

Little Kennesaw Mountain Trail: This trail is an extension of the Kennesaw Mountain Trail, branching off near the summit of Kennesaw Mountain. It adds an additional 1.4 miles to the hike, providing further exploration of the battlefield and offering more captivating views. The trail traverses through forested areas and open meadows, providing a peaceful and scenic experience. It also passes by historical sites, such as trenches and rifle pits, allowing you to immerse yourself in the history and significance of the area.

Cheatham Hill Trail

 

Cheatham Hill Trail: This trail is approximately 3 miles long and leads visitors through the historic Cheatham Hill area, which was a significant battleground during the Civil War. The trail winds through dense woodlands, open fields, and past historic markers, providing glimpses into the past. As you walk, you can imagine the soldiers who once fought in this area. The trail also features the Illinois Monument, a striking tribute to the soldiers from Illinois who fought during the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain.
